There are several visitors that asked us the same question: "What does it mean when a cell phone is unlocked?" So, here is the explanation for all of those who want to learn what is an unlocked phone. In short, unlocked phone means that you can use it on all GSM frequencies, with any service provider. All new GSM cell phones are unlocked at the moment of leaving the factory. Than merchants and network providers take them from the manufacturers in such "unlocked" condition. Some traders sell these "unlocked" phones, but network providers lock the phones prohibiting users to use phones in another networks. If you try to leave that provider, your phone won't work, becouse it is locked. Why?! Becouse of the money you would spend with the contract you signed in the moment of buying your phone. In the USA, almost you can not buy the phone without some network plan. Even on the Sony Ericsson website you will find the following: "Getting unlocked means getting a new cell phone with the freedom to upgrade or change phones whenever you want..." So, in order to use your cell phone with any service provider,
anywhere around the world, you need an unlocked phone and a SIM
card of network provider you prefer. To switch from one to another
network, all you need to do is to replace a SIM card (the card you
get from the network provider, anyway).
